VARbuzz being pounded by spam

For reasons I can only guess at, the site is getting an inordinate amount of comment spam all of a sudden. Almost all of it is being caught, but every now and again some will make it through. Please bear with us as we seek to identify and destroy solve the problem.

16|Jul|2009 1Fixed. Turns out that the spam filter (Akismet) was deactivated in the upgrade to WordPress 2.81. All better now.

16|Jul|2009 2My webmaster said that I should not updrade to WordPress 2.81. I do not know why. Is anyone getting any negative information about the uprade, or had problems?

16|Jul|2009 3Bill — There are reports that a lot of plugins have issues w/ 2.8.1, but if you upgrade your plugins first, you’ll probably be fine.

21|Jul|2009 6When I started to get spammed after the upgrade, I added a captcha plugin that seemed to halt the spam… glad you are back up and running!

22|Jul|2009 7I agree that spam seems to be going up, but I don’t think it is because people have more time on their hands. Rather, spamming technology is just getting more efficient. Still, some of the spam comments they create are really laughable.
