Google to drop real estate listings

February 10 will be the last day Google offers real estate listings on its site.

Per the 800-lb gorilla itself:

At Google one of our key philosophies is to take risks and to experiment. To that end, in July 2009 we announced the ability to find property for sale or rent directly on Google Maps. This is one of the “search options” next to the search box on Google Maps, and is currently available in the US, Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Japan.

The search giant (I think we’re required by law to refer to Google as “the search giant”) cited low usage and “the proliferation of excellent property-search tools on real estate websites” as major reasons for the decision.

  1. Rick says:

Misleading headline. Google is not dropping real estate listings. They won’t be showing them on Google Maps. Big difference.

  2. I was going to say I didn’t see anything in the quote suggesting that Google was getting rid of their real estate listings, but Rick already said it for me. I don’t see a problem with it just moving to google maps. If anything that makes it easier since people can already go there for some real estate needs.

  3. Google is shutting down that service because of low usage. Its better when the people are not interested to take it off and bring some new innovations.

  4. I have a question – It’s not giving it huge losses, is it? Google being so huge should actually keep that service. After all, it’d easily sustain it. When the right time comes, it can always refine the model. Plus, the people , however less the number maybe would get the benefits of this service as well.
