Permits up, but starts — and expectations — are down

According to the Commerce Department’s monthly report for August, housing permits were up 3.2% to their highest level of the year, “despite private-sector expectations of a 1.8-percent decline.”

But that’s the future. Housing starts, meanwhile, were down 5% — more than double the 2.3% decline analysts expected.
