“Realtor” one of Business Insider’s “11 Words You’re Mispronouncing”

If you’re sick, you don’t go to the “doc-a-toor.” If you’re looking to buy or sell property, you don’t go to a “Real-a-toor.” Both words have two syllables, and now Business Insider magazine has pointed out what a lot of us already knew: “Realtor” is one of the most mispronounced words.

Some of the other words that made the list are comptroller (pronounced  just like “controller”) and cache (pronounced “cash,” not “ca-shay”). Oddly missing is forte (pronounced “fort,” not “for-tay”).

This is a pet peeve that I hear about from many people. My husband gets really ticked and corrects people when they say it incorrectly. What really gets him is when a REALTOR® says it incorrectly.

  2. Leonard Willett says:

I wonder if part of the problem is the “l” in the word “Realtor.” Does not the tongue go to the roof of the mouth to pronounce the “l”, possibly making it less intuitive to correctly pronounce “Realtor.” I note that the word “doctor” does not not a central letter that forces the tongue to the roof of the mouth. What do you think?

  3. Betty Kingery says:

When I served our Association as President, I spoke numerous times to our own colleagues about mispronouncing the name of our own profession!! Because so many individuals pronounce it wrong, it gets misspelled incorrectly, as well. I think part of the problem comes from the two vowels e and a beside each other and folks want to make an extra syllable out of the “al.” Let’s all get it right ourselves and then we can train the world! Real-tor !!!

  4. Don Khoury says:

REALTOR® is status both earned and practiced. If agents or brokers pronounce “that” word to prospective clients, and if the prospect uses that pronunciation to me, I make a comment on the correct way to say the word and go on to discuss the ethics with being a REALTOR®.
